ROME
ITALY
Dear Sirs ,
The news of the mysterious death of Mr. Aldo Bianzino, in the prison of Perugia where he entered in good health on 12 October and died two days after, has made us act and write this letter to you.
As European citizens we remember the horrible images of police violence in Genoa, Italy, during the G8 in July 2001. During the attack on the Press Centre of the Genoa Social Forum, several Italian and foreign journalists and peaceful activists were beaten.
Those who carried the responsibility of these acts have yet to be brought to trial. Some heads of Public Security and other offices that were responsible for public order in these events have even been promoted to higher posts. Italy has yet to adopt adequate legislation banning torture. There is a history of impunity of human rights abuses in the Italian republic. Examples of torture have shocked Italian society since the 1950’s.
In addition to this overall negative record comes the current implementation of a repressive drug legislation that was adopted by the former government in the law Fini-Giovanardi. Before the elections, your coalition had promised to modify this law, which has led to a massive criminalization of consumers of illegal substances.
Affecting mainly consumers and activists belonging to the movement against drug prohibition, the implementation of this law has led to arrests and human rights violations that we consider unworthy of a state of law.
We request you urgently to give up this escalation, which risks to seriously harm the democratic image of Italy in Europe.
We think it is also your responsibility to adopt just and effective drug legislation.
A country that criminalizes and kills people because of their lifestyle, that tortures people because they grow a plant, can hardly be called civilised.
As European citizens we ask you to carry out a swift and thorough investigation into the circumstances that led to the death of Mr.Aldo Bianzino and bring those responsible for his death to justice.
Furthermore we ask you as democrats, to let knowledge and humanity prevail over ignorance: please put an end to the prosecution of users, adopt a public health approach in your drug policies and put an end to the war on drugs, which is essentially a war on people and nature.
With kind regards,
