Aunque es sólo una opinión política, los eurodiputados se mostraron
partidarios de promover el uso legal de las sustancias derivadas de la
hoja de coca para luchar contra el narcotráfico.

Lo hicieron al aprobar -por amplísima mayoría, de partidos de izquierda
y de derecha- un informe en el que también se reconoce el papel de la
iglesia en la lucha contra las drogas.

“La hoja de coca no es cocaína. Es una planta histórica que puede tener
muchos usos”, explicó a BBC Mundo el ponente del informe, el
eurodiputado italiano de la Izquierda Unida Europea, Giusto Catania.

Como ejemplo, Catania puso la pasta dentífrica, el champú o el té.

“Hay que promover una actividad civil de comercialización de las
sustancias legales que salen de ella. Eso ayudaría a muchos campesinos y
productores”, declaró.

En su informe, el eurodiputado también aboga por la producción de opio
para fines médicos en Afganistán, al estilo de las “Adormideras para la
medicina”, un proyecto que convierte los campos ilegales “en cultivos
destinados a la producción industrial de analgésicos de base opiácea
legales”.

“Es un ejemplo de ayuda concreta que se puede dar a los trabajadores
rurales evitando que se les criminalice y replicando al tráfico
internacional de estupefacientes”, explica.

Iglesia y mujeres

Catania, apoyado por la gran mayoría de eurodiputados, reconoce que las
iglesias y las comunidades religiosas contribuyen mucho en la lucha
contra las drogas.

“Han sido muy activas en la lucha contra las drogas y, por consiguiente,
sus experiencias deben ser tenidas en cuenta en la formulación,
aplicación y evaluación de las políticas”, dice.

Su informe también dedica un apartado a las mujeres drogodependientes y
a su falta de apoyo social, como deja claro este dato: ellas son sólo un
20% de las personas que participan en los programas de tratamiento.

“Por este motivo, se propone a los medios de comunicación que difundan
más información científica sobre los riesgos que el consumo de drogas
entraña para la salud física y mental, en particular entre las jóvenes y
mujeres embarazadas”, dice.
