Alkohol ist eine gefährlichere Droge als Heroin, wenn die kombinierten Schäden für den Konsumenten und andere beurteilt werden. Dies erklärten britische Forscher am 1. November. Sie stellten eine neue Skala für Schäden durch Drogen vor, die den Schaden für den Konsumenten selbst und für die Gesellschaft abschätzt. Die Wissenschaftler beurteilten Alkohol als insgesamt am gefährlichsten und etwa dreimal so gefährlich wie Kokain oder Tabak.


Nach der Skala, die von einer Gruppe von Wissenschaftlern, inklusive des britischen unabhängigen wissenschaftlichen Komitees zu Drogen (ISCD) und einem Experten der EURopäischen Beobachtungsstelle für Drogen und Drogensucht (EMCDDA), sind Heroin und Crack die zweit- und drittgefährlichsten Drogen.

David Nutt, Vorsitzender des ISCD, dessen Arbeit in der medizinischen Zeitschrift Lancet veröffentlicht wurde, erklärte, dass die Ergebnisse zeigen, dass “ein aggressives Herangehen an die Schäden durch Alkohol eine gültige und notwendige Strategie für die öffentliche Gesundheit darstellt”. Er erklärte, dass aktuelle Klassifizierungssysteme nur eine geringe Beziehung zum Kenntnisstand über die Schäden haben. Drogen konnten bis zu 100 Punkte erreichen, wobei 100 den gefährlichsten Drogen gegeben wurde und null keinen Schaden bezeichnete. Die Wissenschaftler fanden heraus, dass Alkohol am schädlichsten war, mit einem Wert von 72, gefolgt von Heroin mit 55 und Crack mit 54. Unter den beurteilten Drogen waren Kokain (27), Tabak (26), Amphetamine oder Speed (23), Cannabis (20), Benzodiazepine wie Valium (15), Ecstasy (9), anabole Steroide (9), LSD (7) und Zauberpilze (5).
