AMSTERDAM – After countries as Spain and Belgium, also in the Netherlands: a closed cannabis social club. Tree of Life in Amsterdam has been established a few months ago.
The founders have recently gone public with their initiative. Last week the website went online, numerous sites wrote on the club that meets one or two nights a week. Mondays are for people who consider becoming a member, wednesdays are for members only.
Growing
Tree of Life has just over 20 members, and wants to grow slowly. “We expect until 50 members maximum this year. Next year we hope to get another 100”, says Ruud van Wieren, secretary of the association.
The purpose is to grow cannabis inside a club, not more than necessary to satisfy the consumption of the members. The limit is 5 grammes a day. „Lots of people in the city do not have a balcony or a garden to grow”, says Van Wieren. „In the Netherlands growing max. 5 plants for own consumption can be tolerated, we make use of the collectivised rights of the members of the association.
Opium law
The directory of Tree of Life believes that it is a question of time before elsewhere in the countries more cannabis social clubs will pop up. In Utrecht, the Domstad club, an initiative of the city government, has requested suspension of the Opium law. Tree of Life has received at least 2 serious requests for information from others who wish to start a cannabis social club. Van Wieren: „We have already found out various things on the legal plan, which new clubs can use to their advantage.”
