El mandatario Otto Pérez Molina dijo que su propuesta es una alternativa viable a la lucha contra el narcotráfico, pese al rechazo de Washington


El presidente Otto Pérez Molina afirmó que Guatemala decidirá de manera soberana si decide legalizar las drogas, después de que la embajada estadounidense se mostró reacia a la propuesta que el mandatario formuló en ese sentido.

“No estamos haciendo lo que Estados Unidos dice, estamos haciendo lo que tenemos que hacer”, expresó el gobernante guatemalteco.

Consideró que es necesario “encontrar vías alternativas para combatir el narcotráfico. En los últimos 30 años de combate tradicional sólo con armas y muertos no es posible y tenemos que estar abierto a alternativas viables”.

El gobernante, un general retirado del ejército, de 61 años, que ganó las elecciones presidenciales en noviembre con una campaña en la que ofrecía “mano dura” para erradicar la violencia que agobia al país, incluida la creciente presencia del crimen organizado y los carteles mexicanos, sorprendió cuando el sábado expresó públicamente su posición respecto al tema de las drogas y el narcotráfico, lo cual le valió para acaparar la atención internacional.

Dijo que llevará su propuesta a un cumbre de presidentes centroamericanos a realizarse el mes entrante en El Salvador.

El presidente, el primer militar en gobernar Guatemala desde que se reanudó la democracia en 1986 tras una larga dictadura militar, explicó que quizás ahora sorprenda el rumbo que está dando al gobierno debido a que durante la campaña electoral “afuera (de Guatemala) no se ha conocido la propuesta (de su política), solo se han enfocado en (difundir) que soy un general retirado que participó en el enfrentamiento armado interno”.

Sin embargo, Pérez manifestó que su plan de gobierno tiene sesgos más diversos que aplacar la acechante criminalidad. “El hambre también es violencia y también es un problema de seguridad”, manifestó.

El conflicto bélico entre guerrillas marxistas y el gobierno de Guatemala concluyó en 1996 con la firma de un acuerdo de paz, en cuya negociación y elaboración participó como oficial militar el ahora presidente.

Según un informe de una comisión de la verdad auspiciada por Naciones Unidas, los 36 años de hostilidades dejaron más de 200 mil muertos y desaparecidos, que atribuyó casi en su totalidad a la represión ejercida por el ejército contra la población civil.
